What is MP3Gain?MP3Gain is a tool to increase or decrease the volume of MP3 fileswithout re-encoding them. This is useful when you have a lot of musicat different volumes, you can use this tool to make everything the samevolume so that you don't need to adjust the volume on your MP3 playerwhen listening to your music on shuffle.
What does MP3Gain Express do?
This version of MP3Gain does three things. It can:
- Analyze MP3 files and write the volume information to a tagwithout changing the audio data itself. This is useful if you have aplayer that supports 'ReplayGain' tags. (Not iTunes or iPods, so mostlyuseless on Mac OS X)
- Apply Gain to MP3 files. This updates the audio data in the filesto apply the new volume directly to them. This is done without re-encodingthe file, so there usually is no loss in audio quality compared tooriginal data. (I assume that if you make the file loud enough to start'clipping' that this would count as quality loss. The loudness ofdigital audio can be represented within a range of values, and once yougo above the maximum any points above the maximum can only berepresented as the maximum itself. If the 'Clipping' column shows Yesthen this situation is occurring. In some cases, depending on how loudyou go, you may not notice it. You can click the 'Prevent Clipping' checkbox to automatically use a lower value if clipping would occur.)
- Undo changes applied to MP3 files, returning them to their original volume. This will only work if the file has previously had gain applied to it, and undo has not been performed on the file. The undo feature cannot remove file corruption in files that were accidentally damaged by the program.
MP3Gain Express omits some features of the original MP3Gain, hence'Express' tacked onto the name.
- MP3Gain Express does not back up your files for you. As with anyapplication, there is a chance something could go wrong. If you'venever used the tool before, I suggest backing up your files first tomake sure it works as you intended.
- Versions of Mac OS X older than 10.6 are not supported.
- MP3Gain is for audio files only.The .mp4 extension allowed because some AAC files use that extension, butplease do not use it for processing video files. It will not work.
Why port MP3Gain to Mac again, eventhough a port already existed?
This port was made to fulfill one need that I had. I wanted to increasethe volume of a few tracks I had that were too quiet. I didn't need anyof the other features of the program, so they originally were not available in this port. Over time, more features were added as a result of user requests.I started this port a few weeks before Mac OS X 10.7 Lion wasreleased, and Bery Rinaldo's port had not been updated in over 3 yearsso I assumed it was dead. It also wasn't compatible with Snow Leopardat the time.
I decided to do my own port for two reasons:
- The existing port was a front-end written in AppleScript. Anyonefamiliar with my previous work (MultiPatch for example) might be awarethat I prefer to call code natively and not use an external tool to dothe work. I felt that this could benefit from the increased flexibilityof a native application. This approach was eventually changed in version2.0 in order to implement multi-threaded processing, but the existingnative UI has been retained and the application should behave as it didwhen MP3Gain was integrated internally.
- The existing port was bundled with PPC binary at that time, whichwould not work on Mac OS X Lion. My intention was to release the port aroundthe time Lion came out in order to fill that gap.
Is there a build of the command-line version of MP3Gain available on macOS for power users?
Yes. I am now providing a command-line build of MP3Gain with AACGain support. This is the command-line version of AACGain 2.0.0 built for macOS 10.9 or later.It is based on the 2.0.0 fork from Github, refer to the source repository for exact revision used.You can download it here.
Will this port be actively maintainedand updated?
Probably not. MP3Gain itself isn't updated often anymore (Why would itbe? It already does what it was intended to do) and I primarily wrotethis for myself to use once every few years. If this program ever breaks in afuture version of macOS, I will probably update it just so that there'salways a working port available.

aacgain is a modification to Glen Sawyer's excellent mp3gain program. It supports AAC (mp4/m4a/QuickTime) audio files in addtion to mp3 files. If you are not familiar with mp3gain, stop reading this, and go to http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net.
aacgain normalizes the volume of digital music files using the Replay Gain algorithm. It works by modifying the global_gain fields in the aac samples. Free-form metadata tags are added to the file to save undo information, making the normalization process reversable.
aacgain uses the same command-line user interface as mp3gain, and is compatible with the mp3gain Visual Basic GUI.
It also integrates with iTunes using my iGain GUI.

aacgain was implemented using
- mp4v2 to parse mp4 files, and to read and write metadata, and
- FAAD2 to decode the audio samples.
aacgain is released under the GPL V2 license. I distribute AACGain in source code form only

- to ensure that users have the knowledge to fix whatever bugs they find :-)

The mp3gain changes made since 1.7.1 support sample rates up to 96000.

- If the total length of the directory plus file name path exceeded 64 bytes, memory corruption would occur. This has been corrected.
Version 1.6 fixed the following issue:
- Files with a 'cprt' (copyright) tag are now processed correctly. Previous versions of aacgain corrupted the metadata of files with a copyright tag.
- AACGain now works on video or other files where the first audio track has a track number of other than 1. Previous versions required the audio track to have a number of 1. AACGain will still only process the first audio track found on a file. Thanks to Arthur Yarwood at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe for this fix.
Version 1.5 fixed the following issue:
- Running AACGain on Apple lossless or other unsupported file format resulted in a crash with an unhandled exception.
Version 1.4 fixed the following issues:
- Temporary files are created in the same directory as the input file. Formerly they were created in the same directory that the program was run in. This solves a problem only seen on Unix systems where the temporary file could not be renamed back to the original input filename, if the input file was located on a different filesystem from where the program was run. Windows users are unaffected by this problem and can continue to use 1.3.

Version 1.3 fixed the following issues:
- Always uses the /t (use temp file) option, even if it is not specified on the command line. This resolves issues where processed files would not play on the iPod Shuffle.
- Preserves original values of MP4 properties bufferSizeDB, maxBitrate and avgBitrate. Without this change, mpeg4ip/mp4vs was recalulating the actual values of these parameters. This caused bitrate as displayed by iTunes to change slightly, i.e. songs ripped at 320KB would display as 319KB.
- Incorporates recent changes to mp3gain which prevent crashes when working with 48KB files on Linux.
- Source code directory structure was reorganized to be compatible with mp3gain CVS on sourceforge. Thanks to Glen Sawyer, the AACGain source code is now hosted on sourceforge's CVS repository as part of the mp3gain project.
Version 1.2 fixed the following issues:
- Compatibility issue with MP3GainGUI version 1.2.5 or 1.3.4.
- All temporary files created are erased.
Version 1.1 fixed the following issues:
- Multi-channel and mono files now work.
- Fixes compatibility issues with MP3GainGUI: the /o option always outputs Album gain.
- The /f option is ignored for AAC files. If a file starts with a 'ftyp' atom, it is assumed to be AAC, even if /f was specified. This prevents the /f option from corrupting valid AAC files.
- Uses portable versions of all library functions, and has been successfully compiled under Linux. Thanks to Prakash Punoor for his help with this.

See the source code 'linux' subdirectory for details.
